1.1. Business correspondence as a part of the style of official documents, its functions, sphere of circulation and types.
The style of official documents is a functional style of the English language, which is used in the area of public relations. The language of official documents is instrument in communication of states, of a state and a certain individual or society in general, an instrument in communication of enterprises, institutions, organizations, as well as an official means of communication of people in production, trade and service sectors.
The style of official documents belongs to written style of English. It is implemented in texts of laws, orders, decrees, contracts, certificates, licenses, powers of atto
ey, in business correspondence of different business establishments.
I. Halperin [17, p.431] identifies several substyles of style of official documents:
- substyle of diplomacy (used in inte
ational relations);
- subsyle of business correspondence (used in the field of trade and economy);
- the substyle of legal documents (language of codes, judicial documents, gove
ment regulations, parliamentary decisions etc);
- substyle of military documents (language of orders, manuals, reports etc.).
The main purpose of business communication is to define the conditions that ensure the normal cooperation of two parties, that is, to reach an agreement on specific matters between two parties. Commercial relations find a particular expression in the form of official documents: letters, notes, contracts, statute etc. Even those documents that contain protest against the violation of certain conditions are related to the main purpose of business communication, and that is an agreement between two or more individuals or legal entities.
