What is the effect of globalization on the worst off persons in a developing country? Issues of definitions and measurement notwithstanding, this is a question that is of central relevance to present day policy debates on the social dimensions of globalization. Our starting point in this paper is to assume that despite the problems of definition and measurement, it is worthwhile making an attempt to answer this question empirically. Restricting the complex ideas involved in notions of "globalization" and "poverty" to measurable categories based on imperfect data allows us to attempt this. The view taken here is that the alte
